Prime power vs standby power: which rating you actually need

Standby power

Standby is for sites with a reliable grid, where the generator only runs during outages. It handles a variable load for a limited number of hours per year. This is the usual choice for offices, clinics, data centers and warehouses, where the grid does the daily work and the set is there for emergencies.

Prime power

Prime is for sites with no grid or an unreliable one, where the generator is the main source and runs for long hours under a variable load. It is built for continuous variable-load duty, which is what an off-grid industrial site actually demands.

Continuous power

Continuous rating is for running at a steady load around the clock, for example a permanent off-grid installation feeding a constant base load with little variation.

Why the rating decides cost and lifespan

Running a standby-rated set as if it were prime shortens its life and undermines the basis of the rating, including the warranty. Matching the rating to the duty is what keeps the set reliable over years. As a rule of thumb: an off-grid processing site needs a prime set, while an office or a clinic needs a standby one.
